It was established in Munich in 1924 as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kulturmorphologie to support the Forschungsinstitut für Kulturmorphologie, which in 1946 was renamed  the Frobenius Institut after its founder, Leo Frobenius (1873 - 1938).

After its transfer to Frankfurt, many well-known individuals from business, science and public life became members of the Frobenius Society. It was by means of their donations that the Institute's rich collections and archives were begun.

According to its statutes, the aim of the Frobenius Society is the promotion of the scientific work of the Frobenius Institute, which concentrates on non-European cultures, with a special focus on the history and cultures of African countries. Currently, this is being done by financially supporting research projects, publications, lecture series, exhibitions and other activities.

The subsidies of the Frobenius Society and another foundation enable the Frobenius Institute to organize such events and activities as the annual Ad.E. Jensen Memorial Lecture, the annual Frobenius Lecture, and publication of the journal Paideuma and the series Studien zur Kulturkunde, as well as the grant of the Frobenius Research Award.

The Frobenius Society has the legal form of a non-profit registered association. Currently, the steering committee consists of Dr. Eberhard Mayer-Wegelin as chairperson, Prof. Dr. Roland Hardenberg, Dr. Klaus-Jürgen Schmieder and Jürgen Eckert.

Membership to the Frobenius Society is open to everyone. The annual membership fee is € 50 for ordinary members and € 25 for students. If payment is by direct debit,  the membership fees are reduced to € 40 and € 20 respectively. Members receive a free annual copy of the journal Paideuma.
