Togzhan got her MA in Eurasian Studies at the Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan. She has two BA degrees in hospitality management and law. In her master’s thesis, she writes about the return migration and culture of Kazakh repatriates from China, Russia, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan. The title of her thesis is Experience of being an ethnic returnee: Return motivations, post-return life and transnationalism of Kazakh repatriates. She presented one of the chapters of her thesis at the ASN 25th Annual World Convention 2021. She worked as a research assistant in the project Crisis, Risk, and Uncertainty in Modern Eurasian Governance: Managing the politics of fear and the politics of science in the era of COVID-19. She also worked as a RA in a project related to domestic violence in the time of COVID-19 in Kazakhstan. Currently she is a junior researcher and PhD student in the DFG SFB1070 project “Resource Cultures of Rice and Wheat in South and Central Asia: Religious and (agro)economic Dimensions of Cereals”. The focus of her PhD study is wheat cultivation in Kazakhstan.
